Sophia Filosa grew up in Markham, Ontario and began competitive dance when she was 6. She trained at AB Dance in styles including contemporary, lyrical, jazz, tap, and ballet, getting to work with industry professionals from across Canada. She assisted choreographers in summer workshops and bootcamps in Toronto and danced alongside many up-and-coming artists.

Sophia then attended Queen’s University in Kingston, ON having graduated with a BA Honours in Global Development Studies and History and receiving her Certificate in Business. She joined the Queen’s Dance Club, the largest student-run recreational club in Canada, which allowed her love for dance to thrive and grow. She was a part of their Executive Team, having been the Events Coordinator, Service Director, and finally promoted to Co-President in 2023. Sophia also taught the Advanced Choreography class for QDC for 4 years and created group numbers that performed in the club’s bi-annual recitals. As Co-President, she also got the chance to stage-manage and produce these recitals, getting to work with theatre staff to learn the behind-the-scenes work that goes into artistic productions.

Sophia was also a part of the Vogue Charity Fashion Show at Queen’s, which incorporated dance into a creative show focused on fundraising money for different local charities. She was involved as a choreographer and dancer for 3 years, getting to lead their portfolio of 63 dances as the Co-Head of Dance in 2024. In her final year, the show raised $82,500 for their selected charity, spreading the incredulous impact of art across their community.

Sophia is now a student at Boston University about to begin her Master of Science in Arts Administration. Her passions lie in establishing creative spaces that are safe, non-judgemental, and inclusive to all who enter them, no matter their artistic background. She hopes that her academic endeavours can lead to a career where she can make significant, positive change in the arts industry, continuing to celebrate the performing arts and all their beauty.

Outside of dance, Sophia enjoys pilates, going for long walks, game nights with her friends, and obsessing over new genres of music. This is her first season with DanceWorks Boston and she couldn’t be more excited to take on this amazing new role!
